Miracle Of Guan Yin Pu Sa (Goddess of Mercy)

Among the神明 Sen Mings {Hok Kian: Sin Beng} / Deity who was adored in the temple, 觀音佛祖 Kwan Im Hut Co by her followers is considered the one who frequently show the miracle. Someone whom with full of sincerity recite mantras: 南無大悲觀世音菩薩 Nan Wu Da Bei Guan Shi Yin Pu Sa {Na Mo Ta Pei Kwan Se Im Pho Sat}, sooner or later will obtain assistance from Kwan Im, depending on SINCERITY and KARMA of the said person at the time of reciting.

The Miracle of Kwan Im Hut Co was many witnessed & told by her followers. The Miracle of Kwan Im Hut Co to be written here is those recorded within the holy book or someone’s experience or testimony:

1. Those contained within Fa Yuan Zhu Lin Book, including telling about Sun Jing De {Sun Keng Tek}. Sun Jing De was a civil servant of a social department in Ding Zhou city, Wei country. Sun Jing De has made a statue of Dewi Kwan Im and extremely diligent worshipped to the Goddess. One day, she was involved in a robbery incident by one of the perpetrators. Without examination & investigation Sun Jing De was then imposed a death sentence. The night prior to the execution of death sentence, she dreamt to meet with a priest who taught her to recite a prayer which then popular with the name Gao Wang Guan Shi Yin Jing {Ko Ong Kwan Si Im Keng} for 1,000 times in order to escape from the death. In the morning, when she was escorted to the spot of the execution of death sentence, Sun Jing De still kept up reciting that prayer with full of SINCERITY. Exactly at the time of death sentence to be executed, Sun Jing De succeeded to complete the number 1,000 prayer. When a machete of executioner cut her neck, the miracle occurred: such machete was broken into 2 parts! Until 3 times the executioner replace his machete, Sun Jing De remained uninjured even a bit!!! All people attended there were exceptionally surprised. When it was investigated on the neck, statue of Kwan Im made by Sun Jing De, it was found there were 3 lines like scratch traces of sharp object. Receiving this report, the Prime Minister Gao Huan then instructed Sun Jing De to be set free from all cases, and suggested this rescuing prayer from Kwan Im to be written and & disseminated. Ever since Ko Ong Kwan Si Im Keng has been known to date.

2. Sun Dao De, someone who was keen of prayed & lived in era of Jin dynasty. In the age of 50 years hasn’t been blessed with any child. A Buddhist monk who lived in the temple nearby his house suggested to recite Guan Yin Jing {Kwan Im Keng}. Ever since, a moment later his wife got pregnancy & then delivered a male baby.

3. On March 1923, an Army officer, Zhang Jiang Jun, departed with his family from Shang Hai to Nan Jing by plane. After flying several moment, suddenly that plane had engine trouble & uncontrolled. Zhang Jiang Jun, who usually often recited Rescuing Prayer of Kwan Im, then, asked all people on board to pray together. Soon after reciting prayer, from the windows of plane was seen Goddess of Kwan Im smiling among the clouds. The plane that nearly crashed to the earth, suddenly able to wet up with the engine able to run again. Secretaryto Zhang Jiang Jun had the chance to take picture of Kwan Im face that appeared among those clouds.

4. In 1973, a US Air Force (USAF) officer who was performing patrol flying above Taiwan Straits, saw a collection of strange black clouds. He then took the picture of it. After being developed, it was seen the picture of Kwan Im standing on a flying dragon. This event was very shocking & had a chance to be published in several prominent newspapers.

5. In June 1977 big pratima Kwan Im in Port Stanley, Hongkong had moved miraculously. This event was preceded by the radiation of light from the precious stone being adhered on the said pratima forehead, and witnessed by many followers (of religion) who at that time solemnly prayed. This news was quoted by Pikiran Rakyat newspaper, Bandung of 7 June 1977 edition, from one of dailies in Hong Kong.

6. Guan Ming, a writer from Malaysia, told his experience published in the book of “Popular Deities of Chinese Buddhisme” of 1985 edition. In early 1979, Guan Ming experienced an extraordinary spiritual event that has changed him into an obedient Buddhist. For weeks, he prayed to God for the recovery of his younger brother who suffered from a malignant cancer. That prayer was heard by the Almighty and unpredictably Kwan Im Hut Co appeared before him. Kwan Im would only to heal his younger brother, but also said that he would be blessed with a son in the following year. His younger brother was decided by a doctor only able to survive in the next several weeks, it was found totally recovered!!! And in 1980 he was blessed with a son, precisely like what uttered by Kwan Im. Ever since, Guan Ming established a Kwan Im Prayer Association that was centered in Malaysia, to disseminate Buddhism and adore Kwan Im.

Talking about the miracle of Kwan Im probably requires a book as thick as Encyclopedia of Britanica, since each follower has his/her own story on his/her experience. To belief such kind of matters, it is not easy for common people, indeed. But if we are convinced that all religion stem from ONE SOURCE, namely God the Almighty, and introduced through different Prophets, in the places of different customs and traditions, and in different era {Person, Place & Period}, we need not to be surprised with such kind of miracle. Since it also occurs on followers of other religions, providing that they have practiced His teaching CORECTLY & SINCERELY.

Because having a religion is actually personal experience and may not be forced to others that of course having different experiences from us. Thus, the truth is we comply with the teachings our respective religion that pursuant to ourselves, without vilifying the religions of others & considering our own religion is the truest. Thereby, we will be able to live peacefully, tolerantly & mutually respected with other religion.

Di Zang Wang Pu Sa – Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva

“If not me going to Hell, who will go there?” this sentence is frequently used to depict the spirit & will. If not me who else, is the only, namely ourselves confronting with bravery, an extraordinary difficult condition, in which others, one by one will stay away from that matter. Actually, if we understand how frightened & suffered existing in Hell, who could pronounce & able to implement simultaneously, probably only Di Zang Wang Pu Sa.

Di Zang Wang Pu Sa {Hok Kian = Te Cong Ong Pho Sat} or also called Di Zang Pu Sa {Te Cong Pho Sat}. In Sanskrit it is called Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha, is a Buddhist Deity who is adored very much by people besides Guan Yin Pu Sa.

Di means a gigantic earth. Zang means to keep. It indicates that Te Cong Ong Pho Sat’s heart is like a gigantic earth that is able to keep everything, including uncountable number of human beings, particularly those who have roots of good deed.

Te Cong Ong Pho Sat was one of 4 Bodhisattvas that was respected very much by Mahayana Buddhists. All four Bodhisattvas respectively have their own 4 basic qualities:

Guan Yin Pu Sa as a symbol of Compassion (Welas Asih).

Wen Su Pu Sa as a symbol of Wisdom.

Pu Xian Pu Sa as a symbol of Love & Implementation.

Di Zang Pu Sa as a symbol Majesty in a vow to help miserable spirits.

His Majesty Vow that is full of the sense of welas asih reads: “If not me who will go to Hell to help the miserable spirits there, who will go? …… If Hell is not free from miserable spirits, I will not become a Buddha.”

In Chinese people’s heart, Te Cong Ong Pho Sat is a Guardian Angle for departed spirits suffering from torture in Hell, in order that they can be free & re-born (reincarnation). He was often connected to 10 Kings of the Hereafter (Shi Tian Yan Wang). All ten Kings of the hereafter were direct subordinates of him, so that he had the title You Ming Jiao Zhu (Religious Figure in the Hereafter). He become the protector of departed spirits, guiding them to be conscious of their bad conducts in the past & would no longer repeat it, in order to be free from bad karma on the next reincarnation.

Te Cong Ong Pho Sat’s history is recorded in the following Buddhist Holy Book: When Sakyamuni Buddha has accomplished his duty & entered to Nirvana, 1,500 year later he reincarnated to the world & born in Korea, under the name of Jin Qiao Jue {Kim Kiauw Kak}, a prince of King Family in Sin Lo country. After many people knew that he was the reincarnation of Buddha, they called him Jin Di Zang. He had humble character, compassion & kind hearted, not greedy of wealth & throne. He liked delving into Confucian & Buddhist teachings.

In A.D. 653, the year of 4th Yong Wei, namely Emperor Tang Gao Zong government era, Jin Qiao Jue, at that time was 24 years old, by bringing a dog named Shan Ting (literal meaning: “Clever to Listen”) sailed crossing the ocean, then arrived at Jiu Hua Shan mountain, An Hui Province.

Jiu Hua Shan Mountain was actually owned by Min Gong {Bin Kong}. Min Gong was a very kind hearted person, like helping people who were suffering from distress. He promised to provide vegetarian food for 100 (Buddhist) monks. However every time he was successful to gather 99 people, never succeeded to complete the number of 100 people.

Therefore, this time he went by himself to the mountain to look for the 100th Buddhist monk. When he saw Jin Qiao Jue meditating in a hut, he immediately approached him & invited him coming to his house to have meal together. Jin Qiao Jue who saw Min Gong who was seemingly well-matched with him, then fulfilled his invitation, but by filing 1 request. His request was simple: he only wished a parcel of land in Jiu Hua Shan an area of his Gauze dress (Buddhist Monk’s Holy Robe) being spread. Considering such unimportant request, Min Gong directly approved it. But something strange happened. When Jin Qiao Jue spread his gauze dress into air, in fact such heirloom dress changed into extremely large so that it could cover the whole mountain.

Such was Min Gong then delivered land Jiu Hua Shan to Jin Qiao Jue that was used to establish place of worship & taught Dharma. Min Gong even asked his son to accompany Jin Qiao Jue to become a Buddhist Monk. This Min Gong’s son then was called Dao Ming He Sang {To Bing Hwe Sio}. Hereinafter Min Gong left his full of luxury life to become the follower of Jin Qiao Jue & appointed Dao Ming He Sang, his son, becoming his teacher & sanctified himself at Jiu Hua Shan Mountain.

Nowadays, picture or statue of Te Cong Ong Pho Sat is provided with a young Buddhist monk standing on the left & an old Buddhist monk standing on the right. Thai is Dao Ming He Sang & Min Gong.

Jin Qiao Jue lived as a hermit in Jiu Hua Shan Mountain for 75 years, accompanied by his loyal dog. Te Cong Ong Pho Sat passed away in the age of 99 years, in A.D. 728, during the government era of Emperor Xuan Zong of Tang Dynasty, 7th month, 30th day of Chinese calendar. That’s is way every that date Chinese people burn joss sticks (hio) what we call Di Zang Xiang {Te Cong Hio} or Te Cong Incense.

Body of Jin Qiao Jue was placed on a small rock cave. Until one day when the body was taken out, but it was still in good condition & non decomposed & his face was like a sleeping person.

During Emperor Xiao Zong government era, his followers established a pagoda in Nan Tai (one of peak in Jiu Hua Shan) & placed its ashes there. When such pagoda completely built & ashes have been placed, in was evident from that pagoda emitted so bright and clear light that it caused amazement of people who stayed there. That place was then changed its name into Shen Guang Ling meaning God’s Light of Hill. Ever since, Jiu Hua Shan has become one of sacred mountains of Buddhists.

In China there are 4 Sacred Mountains for Buddhists:

Jiu Hua Shan in An Hui Province.

Wu Tai Shan in Shan Xi Province.

E Mei Shan in Si Chuan Province.

Pu Tuo Shan in Zhe Jiang Province.

Jiu Hua Shan, a Sacred Mountain of Buddhists, actually is one of branch of Huang Shan Mountain range, with + 1,000 meter-heights. Since 9 of its peak like blooming flowers, then people dubbed it Jiu Hua Shan (Mountain of 9 Flowers). Here, there are 108 Buddhist Temples. The oldest one is Hua Cheng Si.

In the past, in every 7th month, 30th day of Chinese calendar, many Buddhists were in crowds to Hua Cheng Si Temple to celebrate Di Zang Wang Birthday. This Temple Building is very beautiful, full of high quality wood & stone carvings so that the visitors can enjoy a very valuable Old Chinese work of art. Besides, it should also be enjoyed historical relics in the form of litograph & inscription written by Emperor in the past who visited this Temple. Prime room of this Temple is called Yue Shen Bao Dian, is a place where Te Cong Ong Pho Sat died. There a stone bearing his sole of foot In this room. The visitors entering this room always pray while burning incense.

In the society, adoration of Te Cong Ong Pho Sat is popular, not only in the circle of Buddhists. In addition to being adored in Buddhist style temple, Te Cong Ong has many family temples, ash-house or crematoriums. The purpose is to make their ancestors’ spirits get protection from Te Cong Ong Pho Sat so that it can free faster from torture in the Hell & re-born. Sometimes ceremony at that place was held on Taoism basis, but for the public it is not so important. The important thing for them is prayer itself, without caring about whether it is Taoism or Buddhism.

According to a Book “Notes from Beijing”, at the night of commemorating Te Cong Ong Pho Sat birthday, were performed prayer & recitation of paritta in Temples in Beijing & its environs. It was also prepared a boat made of paper & bamboo, where inside it was put a statue of Te Cong Ong & 10 Kings of the Hereafter which were also made of paper. At midnight after prayer ceremony, candle in the center of boat was lighted up & the boat was lowered into water & let flow anywhere. The people waiting in the brink of river also released small candle being floated on paper- made plate & flowed following such boat. This ceremony was called Liu Hua Deng (Flowing the Flower Lantern). Other provinces in China such as Jiang Su, Zhe Jiang also had this kind of tradition, even though with different variations.

Te Cong Ong Pho Sat was displayed in the state of sitting on a lotus, wearing 5-leaf Buddhist hat with the face emitting light of affection, bringing a ring-stick. At the time it was brought to walk, the rings existing on the tip of this stick will jingle. This sound is expected to make ants or other small animals step aside in order not to be trampled upon by Buddhist Monk, since one of Basic Principles of Buddhism is not killing living thing.

Wi To Pho Sat – Bodhisatva the Protector of Temples

韋陀菩薩 Wei Tuo Pu Sa {Hok Kian= Wi To Pho Sat} had the title of 護法菩薩 Hu Fa Pu Sa, namely Bodhisatva the Protector of Dharma. Wi To Pho Sat was also called 韋陀天 Wei Tuo Tian, was Bodhisatva who protected Buddhist Monasteries, Temples and sacred Buildings. He was also the Protector of Buddhist holy books.

Wi To Pho Sat originated from the God of Brahmana Religion in India. According to the legend, Wi To Pho Sat had 6 heads & 12 arms. He rode a peacock with his hands holding arch and arrows. After Wi To was admitted into Buddhism, he became a Bodhisatva the Protector of Temple/Buddhist monastery 7 became one of 8 Generals of Southern Heavens. 四大天王 Si Da Tian Wang (4 Kings of Heavens) respectively had 8 Kings of Heavens and that totally there were 32 Generals of Heavens. Wi To Pho Sat was the Leader of 32 such Generals of heavens.

As a Custodian of Dharma, generally his Kim Sin (statue) was put in the main room of a temple, back to back with 彌勒古佛 Mi Le Gu Fo {Bi Lek Ko Hud — Maitreya Buddha}. His pratima was described with complete war dress while his hands carrying Hang Mo Pian (Sharp Weapon for Conquering Devil).

As stated by Buddhist Book, Wei Tuo was a son of Tian Wang (King of Heavens) whom because of his good deed Sakyamuni Buddha appointed Wei Tuo as the Protector of Dharma Buddha when he went up to Nirwana. Therefore, he had a duty to protect Dharma Sang Buddha, protected members of Sangha from disturbance of Mara and reconciled if there was inter-sect disagreement. In the event that a Sangha (Mahayana) breached Vinaya (Buddhistship regulations), then he would be confronted to Wi Tuo Pu Sa for Remorse.

Wi To Pho Sat was sometimes appeared as 門神 Men Shen {Mui Sin = the Angle of Doors} who safeguarded the temples together with 迦闌菩薩 Jia Lan Pu Sa {Ka Lan Pho Sat — Bodhisatva the Protector of Sacred Buildings).

Kwan Im Hut Co - Goddess of Mercy

In general, 觀音佛祖 Guan Yin Fo Zhu {Hok Kian = Kwan Im Hut Co} is called Guan Yin. Its familiar call is Ma Kwan Im / Kwan Im Ma 觀音媽. In Sanskrit it is called Buddha Avalokitesvara. Why do many people mention Goan Shi Yin Pu Sa 觀世音菩薩 {Hok Kian = Kwan Si Im Pho Sat }? It is due to his very compassionate namely: will not be a Buddha before all human beings are saved. But actually he has become a Buddhist and has the title Nan Hai Gu Fo南海古佛 {Hok Kian = Lam Hai Ko Hut }. Then we call it Kwan Im Hut Co.

Long time before Buddhism was disseminated from India to China, in Ancient China there had been belief to a compassionate Goddess with the appearance wearing white robe. At the end of Han Dynasty (25 – 228 M), Buddhism entered to China and obtained place in the heart of people. The history of Miao Shan (Biao Sian) Princess in the history of Lam Hai Kwan Im Coan Thoan was known very well in China’s Buddhism and has been united in the inners of Chinese people.

Such was a Compassionate Goddess of China’s origin白衣大士 Bai Yi Da Shi {Pek Ie Tai Su} unified in Avalokitesvara, it makes typical Chinese Buddhist Gods, even its Indian special characteristic has totally lost. The History of Miao Shan Princess who considerably dedicated to the parents was a reflection of the story of Buddha Gautama, in which he left secularism to become a hermit and become perfect in Pu To Shan mount.

Bun Cu Pho Sat – Manjusri Bodhisatva

The Buddhism considers that source of all sufferings in human life is無明 Digression (cannot fully see the real truth of a problem/object). To overcome this digression we must rely on the wisdom/ discretion.

文殊菩薩 Wen Shu Pu Sa {Hok Kian = Bun Cu Pho Sat} is the realization of discretion. Therefore, even though he is not a leading figure in history, but since he could perform distinctive feature of Buddhism ideology implicitly & evidently, then his position in Buddhism is very high. He is the first Bodhisatva who is mentioned in the holy books. Even there is a certain holy book declaring that Wen Shu Pu Sa is a guru of all Buddha within 3 periods of life.

Wen Shu Pu Sa was also called 文殊師利 Wen Shu Shi Li , liberally translated into妙吉祥 Miao Ji Xiang (Miraculous fortune), 法王子 Fa Wang Zi (Son of King Dharma), etc. Wen Shu Pu Sa who represents the wisdom, &普賢菩薩 Pu Xian Pu Sa who represents characters at temples in China & Japan is often performed beside Sang Buddha Sakyamuni.

Manjusri is Bodhisatva of Discretion and Knowledge & to be considered equal to Bodhisatva Avalokitesvara or Kwan Im Pho Sat who constitutes Bodhisatva of Compassion. Manjusri in Sanskrit means “Friendly Grandeur”. Chinese people consider Manjusri is Bodhisatva who gives information & discretion for anyone active in performing Dharma.

Sacred place of Bun Cu Pho Sat is in Mount五臺山 Wu Tai Shan, Shan Xi Province. In this place Bun Cu Pho Sat often shows up his miracle. This Mount Wu Tai Shan is one of 4 holy mounts of Buddhism in China & becomes a gathering place for the followers of Bun Cu Pho Sat. Even though to reach the peak of Wu Tai Shan we must pass by with hard & complicated journey. They want to feel a spiritual tranquility by reaching Wen Shu Pu Sa temple located at the said peak of mountain.

There are many testimonies on the appearance of miracle lights which were witnessed by many followers of Buddhism at the peak of the said holy mountain. By ordinary people, it is probably considered as “hallucination” of those who were suffered from tiredness due to climbing up such mountain. But, it must be considered that the people who climbed up there generally were those who wanted to seek for “Discretion” & they have undergone meditation diligently, so that they had thoughts that is not easily shaky or unstable or easily influenced by the phenomena which may result in the said hallucination.

The most often appearing shape of Bun Cu Pho Sat is his right hand holding magic jewel sword, left hand holding a holy book, rides a green fur lion. Magic jewel sword represents the wisdom which may decide all kilesa (spiritual nervousness). Roll of holy book represents the wisdom like an ocean & guiding the humankind entering holy book warehouse. The lion being ridden is valued as a King of Animal & also called the Roaring of Lion, spread out Dharma Buddha. Then Bun Cu Pho Sat rides the lion bearing the meaning to develop Buddha Dharma & save the humankind.

In the story of Miao Shan, green lion Wen Shu Pu Sa was told as the reincarnation of God of Fire, while the white elephant Pu Xian Pu Sa was God of Water. These both Gods caught the entourage of King of Miao Zhuang who would go on a pilgrimage to Xiang Shan, the place of Miao Shan. Then both of them were conquered by the Commander of Heavens. After Miao Shan becoming Bodhisatva, both his older sisters were also appointed to accompany her. Miao Shu (in other version was called as Miao Qing) appointed as Wen Shu Pu Sa & Miao Yin appointed as Pu Xian Pu Sa. Even though Wen Shu Pu Sa & Pu Xian Pu Sa originated from India, finally had the form of China 100 %.

The temple that is especially used to honor Bun Cu Pho Sat are seldom available, except the one in Wu Tai Shan. But its statues are seen at Buddhism characterized temples. Bun Cu Pho Sat is often performed in the form of Triad together with Sakyamuni Buddha & Pho Hian Pho Sat. Or together with Kwan Im Pho Sat & Pho Hian Pho Sat. in the formof Triad, with Kwan Im, usually Bun Cu Pho Sat & Pho Hian Pho Sat is performed in the form of woman. Kwan Im as a symbol The Most Beneficent & Merciful, Bun Cu represents the discretion, Pho Hian as a symbol of affection implementation. Three of them are the excellence of Buddhism teachings.

The birthday of Wen Shu Pu Sa is commemorated on every 4th day of 4th Month of Chinese Calendar & is particularly commemorated every year by the Buddhism Zen Followers.
